Free Dance Classes for Over 50s

What is MoveAlways?

If you're over 50 and you've been looking for a reason to get out of the house, meet people, and do something genuinely good for your body - MoveAlways was made for you.

MoveAlways is a free, weekly dance and movement programme run by TeesDance — the Tees Valley's flagship charity dance organisation — for adults over 50. It's not a fitness class. It's not a performance. It's gentle, joyful movement in your own community, with people your own age.

TeesDance's MoveAlways programme delivers 72 free dance sessions per year for adults over 50 across East Cleveland, funded by the Woodsmith Foundation - making it one of the most sustained free movement offers for older adults in the Tees Valley.

Sessions are led by professional dance artists who know how to create a warm, welcoming space — one where you move at your own pace, have a good chat, and leave feeling better than when you walked in.

Where and when do sessions run?

MoveAlways runs weekly at four community venues across East Cleveland — all local, all accessible, all free:

Boosbeck Village Hall - Every Monday @ 10am
Skelton Youth & Community Centre - Every Monday @ 12:30pm
Coulby Newham Langdon Square Community Centre - Every Friday @ 11am
Loftus West Road Social Club - Every Thursday @ 10am (starting 4th June)

All three venues are community spaces — no grand theatre stages, no intimidating studios. Just familiar local halls where you can feel at home from the moment you walk through the door.

Who is it for? (honestly, it's for you!)

MoveAlways is designed for adults aged 50 and over — but the people who get the most from it tend to be those who'd never have described themselves as "dancers."

Perhaps you're recently retired and want something regular in the diary. Maybe you've been a bit isolated lately and miss having a reason to get out. Or maybe your knees aren't what they were and you want to move your body without the fear of a boot camp.

I’d never set foot in a dance class in my life. I come every week now, and I leave with a huge smile.
— Boosbeck MoveAlways participant

That's the spirit of MoveAlways. You don't need to have danced before. You don't need to be fit, flexible, or fearless. You just need to show up.

What gets in the way — and how MoveAlways removes those barriers

  • Completely free. No hidden fees, no class passes, no joining costs.

  • Sessions are in local community venues, within or very near where participants live.

  • Zero dance experience needed. Sessions go at your pace.

  • Sessions are gentle by design. MoveAlways is not a high-impact workout.

  • Everyone in the room is over 50. Everyone started as a beginner.

Why dance? the real benefits for over 50s

It might sound like a simple thing - moving to music with a group of people. But the evidence behind dance for older adults is compelling.

Physical wellbeing

Research consistently shows that dance improves balance, coordination, and mobility in older adults — all of which reduce the risk of falls. It's low-impact but genuinely effective movement. You're doing your body good without the wear and tear of high-intensity exercise.

Mental health and social connection

Loneliness is one of the most significant health risks for people over 60 — comparable in impact to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to public health research. Dance sessions like MoveAlways directly address this. You're moving, yes. But you're also connecting, laughing, and being known by name.

Cognitive health

Learning new movement patterns keeps the brain active and engaged. Dance has been linked to improved memory and reduced cognitive decline in older adults — making it one of the most enjoyable things you can do for your brain health. People who dance regularly are 76% less likely to develop dementia! That’s huge!

Dance is recognised by public health bodies as a form of physical activity that simultaneously supports physical, mental, and cognitive health in older adults — making it uniquely valuable compared to single-benefit exercise forms.

What makes MoveAlways different from a fitness class?

MoveAlways is run by professional dance artists through TeesDance - not fitness instructors, not volunteers. That distinction matters.

A professional dance artist brings creativity, care and real craft to a session. They're trained to meet people where they are - physically and emotionally. They create spaces where you're never made to feel slow, uncoordinated, or out of place.

TeesDance has been building this kind of practice across the Tees Valley for years — working in community venues with families, children, care-experienced young people, and disabled adults as well as older adults. The organisation's whole ethos is that dance belongs to everyone — not just those who trained at drama school or can afford a studio membership.

Funded by the Woodsmith Foundation

MoveAlways is made possible by support from the Woodsmith Foundation, which funds community-focused projects that make a real difference to people's lives in the region. That funding is what makes the sessions completely free to attend — and what allows TeesDance to plan 72 sessions per year rather than a one-off taster.

This is sustained, serious investment in the health and wellbeing of older adults in East Cleveland — not a temporary project that disappears after six weeks.
