Every team needs a squad. Ours has more than 300 players.
On Saturday 17 October, before Middlesbrough take on Cardiff City, more than 300 people from across the Tees Valley will walk onto the Riverside pitch to celebrate 150 years of Middlesbrough Football Club. They're aged six to 79. Some have danced for years. Plenty wouldn't call themselves dancers at all.
We announced the project in May, the week Boro played at Wembley. Every place went in under two weeks.
Who's in the squad?
Schools, colleges, youth groups, dance schools and community groups from all five Tees Valley boroughs: Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool and Darlington.
Abingdon Primary School, Whinstone Primary School, St Benedict's Catholic Primary School, Sacred Heart Catholic Secondary School, Middlesbrough College, Stockton Riverside College, We Are TS18, TeesDance Youth, Sri Lankan Tees Angels, Dance City Youth, York Dance Space, Ruff Diamond Academy, Razzamataz, Divadance and Emily Wratten Dance, plus our individual performers.
The starting five.
Jenny Chrisp, choreographer
Hannah Wintie-Hawkins, choreographer, York Dance Space
Zac Healey, choreographer, Ruff Diamond Academy
Teissy Easton, dance artist working with our primary schools
Tom Powell, composer and lifelong Boro fan
Between them they've built one routine that works for a six-year-old and a 79-year-old, in a school hall, a college studio and on a football pitch.
How do you teach 300 people one dance?
In pieces. Teachers and group leaders learned the routine first, in the studio at ARC Stockton. They took it back to their groups, and the lead artists have been visiting to rehearse with everyone. On Sunday 11 October, the whole squad comes together on the pitch for the first time.
